I want to buy a new digital camera and I want to know which pocket-sized camera (one you could actually fit into a shirt or pant pocket without sticking out too much, and one that is not super heavy) has the highest optical zoom on the market right now. Please include the link to the product description. Thank you. So far I'm leaning towards Nikon S10, it's the only ultra-compact with 10x zoom and image stabilizer. Anything better out there? Any reasons to decide against this one? I liked the Panasonic better for the features, but it seems just a bit too bulky for a truly pocket camera. I guess I'm really looking for what's classified as the ultra-compact. So, in order of importance the features are: ultra-compact size optical zoom image stabilization Also check: Kodak V610 - 38-380 mm Nikon Coolpix S10 - 38-380 mm Ricoh Caplio R5 - 28-200 mm Ricoh Caplio R6 - 28-200 mm Samsung L77 - 38-266 mm http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=kodak_v610%2Cnikon_cps10%2Cpanasonic_dmctz1%2Cpanasonic_dmctz2%2Cpanasonic_dmctz3%2Cricoh_caplior5%2Cricoh_caplior6%2Csamsung_l77&camsel=kodak_v705&show=all Read the dimensions at the bottom of each column. The Kodak, Ricoh and Samsung seem to be the slimmest. BE CAREFUL about putting a camera in your pants pocket, though. They are not meant to be sat on in a back pocket or flexed in a front pocket. Be sure that you have NOTHING else in the pocket to bump into the switches or scratch the camera. If the lens tries to extend in your pocket, your camera will break. I don't think it's a great camera, but I think the Kodak is the best one for sticking in a pocket as the zoom lens does not extend from the body, so there is less risk of damage. Picture Taker | Read more What's the best high ISO low noise pocket digital camera? I'm looking for a good digital camera with a high ISO setting with low noise. I've been looking at the fujifilm finepix f100fd, but its kind of expensive. I have a digital SLR, so i'm not necessarily looking for a top of the line performance camera, just a good pocket digital camera to replace mine that broke. I want something with a high ISO setting so I can take good quality pictures at concerts. Newer expensive ones, like the F100FD. Pocket digital cameras are fighting on two fronts when it comes to low-light, high ISO pictures. The first is photon noise, which is caused by the random arrival of photons at the sensor. The smaller the sensor, the fewer photons you collect. The fewer photons you collect, the more random they are. They more random they are, the "noisier" your pictures become. This is an inherent physical property of light, and there are no longer any major improvements to be made in decreasing photon noise. Small sensors will always struggle with this. The second is read noise, or all the collective electronic noises the camera adds to the image during capture. Pocket cameras use physically small sensels, so to maintain the same fill rate (that is, the same light-sensitive area per pixel) as DSLRs, and perhaps to keep fabrication costs down, the absolute size or sophistication of noise cancelling electronics per pixel is lower: The smaller sensels are less aware of their *own* noise, and are less able to filter it out before amplification, so ISO 1600 on a pocket camera may have literally 16 times the read noise of ISO 100. The same is not true of DSLRs. Since it isn't an inherent property of light, it's conceivable that read noise could be completely eliminated one day, but we're not there yet. The trend is that newer cameras simply have less. Even if we could eliminate read noise, photon noise would still be there, lurking in the highlights at high ISOs. Cameras five years ago had about as much as they do now, and they always will. The answer to both problems is to use a camera with a larger sensor. I would suggest you purchase the newest camera with the fastest lens covering the largest sensor you can find. Just don't expect any miracles. That's what you bought the DSLR for. Derge | Read more |
